Heidi's Story
When Heidi arrived at Hope Housing in 2019, she was struggling with long-term addiction, poor mental health and the impact these challenges had on her life. Having experienced depression and anxiety since the age of 13, alongside many years of alcohol and crack cocaine dependency, repeated attempts at recovery and periods of instability, she was looking for a fresh start.
Hope Housing welcomed Heidi and provided the support, structure and encouragement she needed to begin rebuilding her life. Throughout her time at Hope, Lisa Everett remained a constant source of support and guidance, helping Heidi navigate both the challenges of recovery and the ongoing difficulties associated with her mental health.
Heidi became actively involved in the activities and groups offered by Hope Housing, which helped reduce isolation and encouraged positive social connections. She particularly valued opportunities to engage with others, build her confidence and take part in activities that gave her a sense of purpose and belonging.
As her recovery progressed, Heidi began volunteering at a local charity shop, a role that brought her confidence, enjoyment and a renewed sense of responsibility. She developed new routines, built meaningful relationships and worked hard to create a more stable future despite the challenges she continued to face.
In March 2024, Heidi moved on from Hope Housing and into her own accommodation. This was a significant milestone and reflected the progress she had made during her time with the organisation. Although she continued to experience depression and anxiety, she remained determined and resilient, drawing on the skills and support networks she had developed over the previous five years.
Tragically, Heidi took her own life in November 2024. Her death was a profound loss to everyone who knew her. Heidi is remembered for her kindness, resilience and the courage she showed throughout her recovery journey. Her story reflects both the positive impact that support and community can have and the ongoing challenges that many people continue to face with their mental health and wellbeing.
Heidi's time at Hope Housing left a lasting impression on staff, volunteers and fellow residents. She will be remembered with great affection, and her journey continues to inspire those working to overcome adversity and rebuild their lives.
"I'll soon be five years clean, and I couldn't have done it without the support of Hope Housing."
