Tommy's Story

"My life now is completely different. I've got my family back, I work full-time, and it all started at Hope Housing."

Before coming to Hope Housing, Tommy had spent over 24 years trapped in addiction. He struggled with heroin, crack cocaine and alcohol dependency, which had cost him his home, his relationships and his confidence. After leaving treatment with nowhere to live, Tommy found himself homeless and unsure how to manage even the most basic aspects of everyday life.

Hope Housing offered Tommy a safe place to stay and the support he desperately needed. Lisa Everett became both his counsellor and a key source of guidance during his recovery journey. Tommy received support with attending appointments, managing medication, shopping, building routines and learning essential life skills.

Although Tommy experienced a relapse during his first 15 months at Hope Housing, he was honest about his struggles and was met with support rather than judgement. With encouragement from the team, he re-engaged with recovery meetings and continued working towards his goals.

Over time, Tommy rebuilt his confidence, returned to education, gained employment and developed a strong recovery network. Today, he has been in a healthy relationship for nine years, has reconnected with his children and grandchildren, works full-time and enjoys hobbies that addiction once took away from him.

Reflecting on his journey, Tommy says that everything changed when he walked through the doors of Hope Housing. He believes the support he received gave him the opportunity to rebuild his life and create a future he never thought possible.
